TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) acting head, Sigit Priohutomo, stated the stunting or impaired growth of a child is caused by the parenting errors. Sigit asserted the issue is not affected by the economy.

“Stunting also occurred in the city. It’s not because of poor or rich the parents are, but parenting error, the nutrients intake during the pregnancy is not sufficient,” said Sigit in Depok, Tuesday, May 22.

Sigit explained that preparation since early days before pregnancy could beset the stunted growth of a child. “Maternal preparation including not suffering anemia is fundamental. There is also a program of first 1.000 days of pregnancy until the second year of [the baby’s age], the breast milk also has to be sufficient,” he said.

The parents especially the mother should have understood about healthy living, fulfilling the nutrient intake during the pregnancy, giving an exclusive breastfeeding, and choosing healthy food for the family.

Sigit further explained the government has established a program to reduce stunting cases in 1,000 villages through the village budget. The village number will be increased to 1,600 villages.

However, there are only 70 villages that have been integrated with Kampung KB initiated by BKKBN thus far. The program is enforced to accommodate various work of ministries and institutions that focus on human development, infrastructure, and economy.
