TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Destructive Fishing Watch (DFW) and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) held a mangrove planting event to celebrate World Water Day 2018. They also cleaned the pond at Nizam Zahman Ocean Fishing Port in North Jakarta, today.
DFW national coordinator Abdi Suhufan said the activity was a gesture of concern on the capital’s coastal ecosystem.
"There is the reclamation of seawater intrusion as well, because in the mainland there are people taking the groundwater, which eventually caused the land to slope," he said at Nizam Zahman Ocean Fishing Port, North Jakarta, Friday, March 23.
Head of Ocean Fishery Port of Nizam Zahman, Rahmat Irawan, said the mangrove planting would help conserve the ecosystem.
"This [activity] is positive because this place is the habitat of fish, crabs, and shrimps as well. Waste in Jakarta is also in the limelight so we hold this activity," said Irawan.
Irawan added some 550 trees would be planted in the event, in which around 400 people participated.
Irawan explained his party cleaned the port every or twice a month to rid the water of waste. He added this activity was aimed at boosting the people’s awareness against sea littering and on environmental ecosystem.
The World Water Day celebration comprises a series of simultaneous events, viz. mangroves planting, pond clearing, the introduction of the harbor’s history and plastic waste treatment training.
