TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A survey conducted by Mastercard Indonesia shows that 58.5 percent of smartphone users have actively used their mobile phones for online shopping over the last three months. The figure was based on the 2017 Mastercard Mobile Shopping study.

“The growth of online shopping soared along with the increasing smartphone usage in Indonesia,” said Mastercard Indonesia Director Tommy Singgih on Monday, September 25.

According to Tommy, the smartphone use has increased by 40-50 percent, which is estimated to be the main drive behind Indonesia’s non-cash shopping.

“[The number of] cash transactions remains high at 90 percent, but it will slowly shift to cashless transactions,” said Tommy.

In addition to recording the data on smartphone users’ online shopping behaviors, Mastercard Indonesia also revealed the level of flexibility and comfort offered by online-shopping via a smartphone which reached 49.9 percent. About 43.5 percent of respondents agreed that mobile apps simplify their online shopping activities.
