Minister: Bali Airport to be Closed if Eruption Escalates

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that Ngurah Rai Internasional Airport in Bali will be closed if the eruption of Mt. Agung keeps escalating.
"Government can close flights to Ngurah Rai Airport if the eruption of Mt. Agung escalates and poses threats to the safety of the flights," Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in Pemalang, Central Java on Saturday (23/9).
He explained that until Saturday (23/9) flights to Ngurah Rai Airport have been running well and there has not been any problems relating to Mt. Agung eruption.
The Minister continued that government have prepared evacuation plan should the eruption escalates. The flights, he added, can be diverted to other airports namely Banyuwangi in East Java, Lombok, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, and Ujung Pandang.
