Communication Minister : Persecution Violates Information Law

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said that persecution, which is an act of hunting down a person or a certain group by disseminating identities of the person, violates the law on information and electronic transactions.
“Disseminating a list of people to be persecuted is not allowed. We live in a constitutional state, it means that we can’t be vigilantes. It’s also not allowed on the internet because the law says that making threats to certain people is prohibited,” Rudiantara said in Jakarta on Friday, June 2.
Under Law No. 19/2016 on the amendment to Law No. 11/2008, threatening a person may lead to a six-year imprisonment and a fine up to Rp1 billion.
Therefore, Rudiantara called on the public not to post messages containing threats and encourage people to make them viral on social media. He added that his ministry will work with police to address social media account spreading persecution threats.
