TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 17 Chinese workers working working for mining company Bintang Delapan Mineral (BDM) Morowali at the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), Central Sulawesi, were confronted by students of the Kendari Muhammadiyah University on Tuesday, December 27, 2016.
In the incident that took place in the city of Kendari, the foreign workers' car's windshield was shattered. It started when dozens of foreign workers, who had only arrived at Haluoleo Airport, headed to a dorm provided by their employer in Kasilampe village at 11:00 AM local time.
They were suddenly blocked by students during the trip. Police were quick to intervene and took control of the situation by dispersing the students.
The foreign workers were shortly taken away from the angry mob by Kendari Police Precinct personnel to the Immigration Office.
IMIP corporate representative Muhammad As'ad lamented the incident. As'ad said that the confrontation is the second of its kind since December 20, adding that the company has been accused of hiring illegal workers.
"I can confirm that the company does not hire illegal workers, you can check all the documents," As'ad told Tempo.
"We just want to check their documents, whether they are illegal [workers]. If they really are legal [ones], they should not hesitate to show their faces and documents," a student said.
