TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of Muslims were not deterred by rain to perform Friday prayers at the National Monument (Monas) area, Central Jakarta. The khatib (the person who delivers the sermon or khutbah) of the prayer was Habib Rizieq Syihab, the leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).
“Today, on Friday, Muslims came to Jakarta not to undermine diversity. They came to defend the Quran,” FPI’s Rizieq said in his Friday prayer speech.
According to Rizieq, the Quran is a holy book which contents are not ambiguous and therefore does not deserve any insult.
Those who insult the Quran, he said, are apostates. “The Quran is the heart of Islam,” he said.
Present among the congregation were President Joko Widodo, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Chief Security Minister Wiranto, the National Armed Forces (TNI) commander Gatot Nurmantyo, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Syaifudin and other public officials.
