TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto said that there are 53 Indonesian ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) supporters that have returned home. "We approached them [and persuade them] to come home," Wiranto said on Thursday, October 27, 2016.
Wiranto explained that the government had provided the former ISIS supporters with understanding and managed to change their views of radicalism.
In addition, Wiranto added that the government have persuaded them to return to their normal life. "We have changed their ISIS ideology [...]. But for hard-line leaders and strong [radical] figures, it would require special treatment," Wiranto added.
Wiranto said that the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) will put the 53 individuals under constant supervision. "BNPT will do whatever is needed to be done," Wiranto said, without revealing details about any treatment that will be given to the former ISIS supporters.
