TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung asserted that the government would not meddle in the plan announced by the House of Representatives to reappoint Setya Novanto as the House Speaker.

“It’s fully the House’s discretion,” Pramono told journalists at his office on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

Earlier, a number of politicians called for Setya’s reappointment as the House Speaker after the MKD rehabilitated Setya’s name in connection to the Freeport shakedown scandal.

The decision to rehabilitate Setya’s name was taken after the Constitutional Court (MK) ruled that the conversation wiretap in the case was illegal.

The plan sparked reactions from a number of lawmakers. Asrul Sani, member of House’s Commission III from the United Development Party (PPP), viewed that Setya’s reappointment was not possible, since it is not mentioned in MKD’s ruling and is not governed by the legislative institutions law (MD3).

However, Pramono revealed that the government would continue to monitor the plan and leave the process to the House.

“It has nothing to do with the government. So, we will let the House to deal with it,” he went on.
