Thousands of Workers to Strike over Wages, Tax Amnesty

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tens of thousands of workers from the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (KSPI) will hit the road on Thursday, September 29, to express their concerns over wages and the tax amnesty.
Around 15,000 to 20,000 workers will gather at the city hall and IRTI parking lot at the national monument in Jakarta.
“They may hold a strike in accordance with what has been agreed [between police and workers union] in order to avoid disturbance to public rights,” said Jakarta Metro Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Sunanta, Tuesday, September 27, 2016.
According to Suntana, the rally will be held from 8 AM to 6 PM. Protesters will walk from the city hall and IRTI parking lot towards the horse statue, the Constitutional Court (MK), the Palace, the Supreme Court (MA) and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) office building.
The KSPI secretary general M. Rusdi said the workers will demand a Rp650,000 increase to the nationwide minimum wage and the repeal of the tax amnesty law.
