Jokowi Issues Instruction to Revitalize Vocational Schools

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo issued Presidential Instruction No. 9/2016 on the revitalization of vocational high schools in a bid to improve the quality of human resources in Indonesia.
“President Jokowi instructed Working Cabinet’s ministers, head of the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) and governors to take necessary steps in accordance with their tasks, functions and authorities,” the Cabinet Secretary said in a press release on Monday, September 19, 2016.
Included in the Presidential Instruction is an order to map demands on vocational school-graduated workers in relation to the roadmap of vocational school development to be crafted by the Education and Culture Ministry.
The Education and Culture Ministry has been instructed to perfect the curriculum for vocational schools to produce graduates that would meet employers’ demands. In addition, the Ministry has been assigned to increase the number of vocational school teachers, as well as to improve their quality.
President Jokowi also instructed the Research, Technology and Higher Education Ministry to accelerate the availability of vocational school teachers and develop study programs in universities to produce vocational school teachers.
“President Jokowi also instructed the Industry Minister, the Manpower Minister, the Transportation Minister, the Maritime and Fisheries Minister, the State-Owned Enterprises Minister, the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, the Health Minister and the Finance Minister to project the development and competences of vocational school graduates,” the Cabinet Secretary added.
