TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has finally cleared up the confusion over the tax amnesty policy. Jokowi explained that since the beginning, the tax amnesty policy was designed to target major taxpayers.
"The main targets are those who stash large amount of cash overseas. However, others can also participate: medium businesses, small business," President Jokowi said during the opening of the Indonesia Fintech Festival and Conference in Serpong, South Tangerang on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
In addition to targeting top taxpayers, the tax amnesty policy is not mandatory, Jokowi said. On the contrary, taxpayers reserve the rights to decide whether or not to participate in the program. "As for fishermen, retirees, I think they shouldn't bother to participate in tax amnesty policy. There's no need to exercise their [tax amnesty] rights," Jokowi said.
Jokowi hoped that his explanation would clear up the confusion over the tax amnesty policy. “You have been asking questions about things that shouldn’t have been blown out of proportion. [Tax amnesty] is a right. Had it been mandatory, your [concerns] would've been more understandable,” President Joko Widodo said.
