TEMPO.CO, Helsinki - Microsoft said Wednesday that it will cut 1,350 employees in Finland as a result of its plan to trim its smartphone hardware business.
"We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said.
The job cuts in Finland is a part of its overall plan to cut 1,850 jobs throughout the globe, and the company would record an impairment and restructuring around $950 million, said the company in an announcement.
Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat said Microsoft’s product develop unit said in Tampee, southeast Finland, would be closed and all employees would be dismissed.
Meanwhile, about 280 sales and marketing employees in Espoo, west Helsinki, would not be affected.
The job cut announcement came a week after Microsoft said it has decided to sell its feature phone business to Finland’s HMD Global and FIH Mobile Taiwan, and to keep developing Windows 10 smartphones.
