TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Indonesia’s central bank (BI) West Sumatra Chapter has dismissed the issuance of Rp200,000 banknote bearing an image of a peacock which has been circulating on social media in the past few days.
“It's not true; because if it is true, it would have been announced long before the issuance,” said the Chairman of BI West Sumatra Chapter Puji Atmoko in Padang on Monday, May 2, 2016.
According to him, BI would have made an announcement of the issuance of new banknotes at least six months to one year beforehand. “We have not made any announcement but [the Rp200,000 banknote] has been circulating, it’s peculiar,” he said.
The Rp200,000 banknote circulating on social media has a yellow, purple and white background bearing an image of two men riding horses.
Fitra, Padang resident, said the picture of Rp200,000 banknote has been circulating in the past three days via social media, from facebook to BlackBerry Messenger.
“I’m not sure; the picture has been circulating from out of nowhere without any announcement [from BI],” he said.
