TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General for Air Transport for the Ministry of Transport said that the government will soon begin the construction of Douw Aturure Airport in Nabire, Papua, to help support the economic, trade, and tourism development in the area - in addition to increase the connectivity of Nabire to the rest of the region.
The Secretary for the Directorate General for Air Transport, Praminto Hadi, said in Jakarta on November 30, that the Transport Ministry's officials have begun to work with Papua's provincial government towards signing a Joint Agreement on the Construction and Development of Douw Aturure airport in Nabire regency in Papua.
In the agreement, Hadi continued, clauses will be put in place to accelerate the development of the airport. "This agreement will provide a common guideline for all stakeholders in the construction and development of the airport," he said.
Hadi said that agreement is designed to optimize the Douw Aturure Airport's function as a public utility that meets all safety and security criteria.
"The realisation of the airport will be done in phases by the Directorate General of Air Transport, Nabire's Administrative government, and Papua's Provincial Government - based on the masterplan that is crafted to reflect the regulatory environment," said Hadi.
The construction of the airport will involve several grants from Nabire's Administrative government to the Airport's management - including the land where the airport will be built on.
