TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-President Joko Widodo asked the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) to eradicate cartel business practices in seven commodities, KPPU head Muhammad Syarkawi Rauf said on Friday, November 13, 2015.
According to Syarkawi the KPPU will first focus on eradicating beef cartel practices by bringing 32 companies allegedly fixing beef prices to justice. Syarkawi added that Jokowi asked the KPPU to supervise other commodities, such as corn, salt, soybean, chicken and sugar.
“The government has set a target to be achieved. The KPPU is ready to support the government in eradicating cartel practices,” Syarkawi said, adding that KPPU’s official decision related to beef cartel would be issued within two or three months.
In addition to supporting the KPPU to eradicate food cartels, Jokowi planned to issue a presidential regulation to reinforce KPPU’s authority or to amend laws on KPPU’s functions. Syarkawi revealed that the regulation would be related to the amount of fine for violations.
