TEMPO.CO, Pekanbaru-The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Pekanbaru Station reported that Terra and Aqua satellite still monitors 156 hotspots spread throughout Sumatra. South Sumatra Province still becomes the most contributing hotspot area with 126 hotspots.
“Hotspots were observed at 7 AM,” BMKG Pekanbaru Station Chief Sugarin Widayat said on Tuesday, October 13.
Sugarin said the hotspots have also spread in several regions including Jambi (19 hotspots), Lampung (8 hotspots), and Riau (1 hotspot). The number of hotspots in Sumatra tends to reduce compared to the previous days of 725 hotspots.
Generally, said Sugarin, the weather in Riau is bright and cloudy with the occurrence of smog. Uneven rain with light intensity occurred in the northern, western and central part of Riau. “The maximum temperature is at 33 degrees Celsius,” he said.
Smog from the remaining forest and land fires in Sumatra still disturbs air quality in Riau. The air quality index is still at an unhealthy level or 173 Psi. Smog also interferes with visibility in some areas including Pekanbaru with visibility of just 1,000m, Rengat with 800m, Dumai with 500m and Pelalawan with 700m.
