TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chief of the House of the Representatives, Fadli Zon, was named the President of Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC). The Gerindra politician replaced Mexican parliament member Garcia Cervantes. “I was elected by acclamation,” Fadli said Thursday, Oct 8.
The election was decided by the GOPAC board of directors. The three hour meeting was attended by several GOPAC representatives from Africa, Arab, Latin America, East Asia, Oseania, Caribbean, and North America. With the election, Fadli said, Indonesia will build a satelite office in the Secretariate General of the House of Parliament.
GOPAC board of directors have also agreed to name Paulo, a Latin American representative parliament member, and Hon Osei Kyeh-Mensah Bonsu from Ghana as Vice President. The secretary position goes to John Hyde, an Australian parliament member. Meanwhile, the treasurer is a parliament member from Caribbean who is also founder of GOPAC.
GOPAC is a cooperation forum of parliament members which has the duty to eradicate corruption. The forum was established by 170 parliament members and 400 supervisors based on the mandate of Ottawa conference in October 2002. Its institutional structure comprise of Board of Directors and GOPAC Executive Committee (President).
Fadli explained that the election of GOPAC President was initially proposed through a vote from all its members. However, the mechanism had been altered because it is not possible during the current condition. The voting mechanism will be valid two years from now. In the future, presidential candidate of GOPAC will be proposed upon the approval of at least three countries from each branch forum.
