TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Technology and Higher Education Minister M. Nasir plans to construct a nuclear reactor and laboratory to educate the public on nuclear energy. The reactor and laboratory will be managed by the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan). "People have been against nuclear energy. I want to prove that Batan is able to produce good energy," said Nasir.
Nuclear has been considered dangerous and plans to build nuclear reactors have always been opposed. Nasir hoped that Batan can build the laboratory as a pleasant place for study and recreation.
"By building a nuclear reactor as a laboratory for tourists, people can see the technology. What's important is that it is safe, secure and efficient," said Nasir, adding that the laboratory will be build with a capacity of 10-20 million megawatts. Construction is set to begin in 2016 and expected to be completed in 2017.
The laboratory will be located in Serpong, South Tangerang, Banten, near the Science and Technology Development and Research Center (Puspiptek).
Nasir explained that the laboratory construction will serve as an initial phase of the government's plan to build a nuclear power plant.
