Lack of Cadres, Political Parties Turn To Ex-Cons: Activist

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- CEO of General Election and Democracy Association (Perludem), Titi Anggraini, said that some political parties have failed in generating cadres. The failure is as seen in the number of parties proposing former thugs as cadres.
"Political parties have no concept of cadre-based politics and is co-opted with elite influence of major capital. Political parties are highly permissive," Titi told Tempo on Tuesday, August 4.
Titi said that political parties now prioritize popularity and financial support as a main consideration, hence at times proposing candidates like ex-con. She said that parties are likely to put aside public ethics and candidate’s morality, amid the fact that corruption – being the most cases – has betrayed public trust.
"[Ex-cons] should not be public officials with major authority," said Titi.
The “ex-con returning to politics” trend is now wide open after the Constitutional Court cancelled post-crime hiatus regulation on July. The court has stated that ex-con can run for political term without having to wait for five years following his/her sentence.
