TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, the Regional House, and the Transportation Department have reportedly failed to attract middle-class people to use busway or public transportation.
A survey institution called Kedai KOPI revealed that 80.4 percent of the respondents preferred to use personal vehicle compared to public transportation. Spokesman Hendri Satrio said that only 13.6 percent of the respondents opted public transportation, while the remaining 6 percent remained abstain.
The survey was administered on May 26 to June 3, targeting 250 respondents of middle-class people. Respondents believe that personal vehicle is preferred as mass transportation cannot yet provide comfort.
Therefore, government is expected to provide mass transportation that can meet the people’s demand. Hendri added that the city administration should focus on developing mass transportation for the suburbs, such as Bekasi, Depok, Tangerang, and Bogor. He claimed that most of city workers live on the outskirt of Jakarta, meaning that they need public transportation and facility.
