Ministry Suspends Hundreds of Universities

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The director of institutional affairs and cooperation of the Research and Technology and Higher Education Ministry, Hermawan Kresno Dipojono, said there were 235 suspended universities in Indonesia at present. “The number changes everyday,” he said on Thursday, May 28, 2015.

The ministry has deactivated the 235 universities for failing to meet the government's standards. “One of the reasons is that they have too many study programs that are below the standards,” he said.

The standards, among others, include a teacher-student ratio. Another reason that might result in the ministry’s deactivating a university is administrative problems. “We have a lot of standards,” he said.

Hermawan said lecturers of suspended universities would therefore not receive any donation or scholarship. “Also, they cannot issue legal diplomas,” he said.

Hermawan confirmed there had been education institutions bereft of operation permits that continued to issue certificates, yet he said he was unsure of their number.

“We are not investigators. We only work based on reports,” he said.
