TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Agus Salim, lawyer of death row inmate Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, said there was a novum that could be a strong basis for a second judicial review. He claimed that Mari Jane was not a courier in the drug transaction.

“She was just a syndicate’s victim. There is a novum that says is not a courier in the drug transaction,” said Agus on Monday.

According to Agus, based on Mary Jane’s background as a housemaid, it is unlikely for her to be someone who has an important role in drug trafficking. She also only finished junior high school in the Philippines.

Agus believed that the mother of two is only a victim of drug trafficking syndicate. She also showed good behavior and was not involved in drug trafficking unlike other prisoners while she was in prison. If categorized in drug trafficking, Mary Jane is only an innocent courier.

Agus said that he already filed for judicial review on Monday, April 15. He added that the novum will help reduce Mary Jane’s sentence to life imprisonment.
