BKPM to Develop Special Economic Zones in Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) announced that it would develop four special economic zones in Papua province and West Papua province and every economic zone will have different primary sectors.

BKPM chief Frangky Sibarani said that those four regions would be located in Merauke, Sorong, Bintuni Bay and Raja Ampat.

In addition to managing four upstream sectors in those economic zones, Franky said that the investors who would make investment in Papua and West Papua were also expected to develop industries in the downstream sectors.

Franky said that the special economic zone in Merauke would focus on developing agricultural and forestry sector, while the economic zone in Sorong would focus on developing maritime-based industries.

In the meantime, the special economic zone in Teluk Bintuni would focus on building fertilizer plants and oil and gas based petrochemical industries and for the special economic zone in Raja Ampat, Frangky said that BKPM would still communicate and coordinate with a number of related sides.

In 2015, Papua province eyes an investment worth Rp15 trillion, while in 2014, investment in the province reached 14.9 trillion from the targeted Rp14 trillion.

In the meantime, West Papua province eyes an investment worth Rp4.5 trillion in 2015, while in 2014, investment realization in the province reached Rp3.6 trillion from the targeted Rp3.7 trillion.
