TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives’ (DPR) Commission V has decided to form a working committee to probe alleged ethical violation by Corruption Eradication Commission chief Abraham Samad. Commission chief Aziz Syamsuddin said the working committee will be led by Trimedya Panjaitan, a politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) who is also the commission’s deputy chief.
“I hope the committee can begin working in the next trial process,” he said on Monday. The working committee will probe witnesses in Samad’s case who were already present in the hearing with the commission. “The committee’s final result will become recommendation for our partners,” he said.
PDI-P acting secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto previously admitted that he had met Samad six times before the president election last year. The meeting began in early 2014 to discuss Samad’s wish to become Joko Widodo’s vice president. Samad denied such meeting.
Last Monday, commission V invited Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto and Home Affairs Minister who is also fromer PDI-P secretary general, Tjahjo Kumolo. Andi was invitied in his capacity as former chairman of Eleven Team, which was formed by PDI-P, who was in charge of screening vice president candidates.
Tjahjo said he met Samad once in an informal meeting at Capital Apartment in April 2014. “We didn’t discuss presidential or vice-presidential candidacy at all,” said Tjahjo. Meanwhile, Andi said he met with Samad’s family once at a rented house in Pulomas, East Jakarta, to complete Samad’s background data.
