Indonesian Navy Seize Thai Illegal Fishing Boat in Sorong

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, said that the Indonesian Navy patrol caught an illegal fishing boat from Thailand in Sorong, Papua. The illegal fishing boat was carrying crew from the Philippines.
"The Navy has caught a Thai boat, with crews from Philippines, in Sorong," Susi said on Friday, January 30, 2015.
Earlier, the Ministry seized 14 illegal fishing boats on January 21 through January 25, 2015. Asep Burhanudin, Director General for Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance, said that those illegal fishing boats comprised of seven foreign boats and seven Indonesian boats.
The foreign boats were seized for catching fishes without permits. They were also alleged for violating Article 93(2) of Law No. 45/2009 on Fisheries, and are subject to six years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 20 billion at maximum.
Asep added that three out of the seven Indonesian boats were seized for operating without permit. The rest of them were allegedly conducting group fishing operation despite having single fishing operation permits.
