TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama confirmed the policy to apply taximeter on public minivan will be implemented in 2015. Ahok said the taximeter application is one of the requirements for public minivan operators to get loans from banks to buy new vehicles.
“Banks would not grant loans if [public vehicle operators] are counting on daily fixed payment system,” said Ahok.
Ahok explained that rejuvenating public transportation is an absolute requirement to encourage public to shift from private vehicles to public transportation. Currently, public transportation has failed to provide optimum service and convenience.
The condition is even worse because public minivan owners apply fixed payment that forced drivers to make stops to wait for passengers. According to Ahok, such an act often causes traffic jam that makes people avoid public transportation.
Ahok said public transportation vehicles would be paid based on the kilometers covered by the vehicles. Drivers will have a salary twice as much as the provincial minimum salary so that they don’t have to make stops to achieve daily payment target.
