TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Operation Zebra of the Jakarta Metro Police managed to catch 451 traffic violaters in West Jakarta. “Most violations are from contra flow and failure to wear safety gears,” Head Unit to West Jakarta Traffic Area, Ipung Purnomo, told Tempo.
As many as 401 violators have been issued tickets while 50 others were given a warning during the operation. “This shows that people lack of discipline on the road,” he said.
Operation Zebra has been conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department since November 26 -- until December 9 -- to reduce traffic violations.
In the areas of West Jakarta, the operation was held at three points; Slipi Jaya, Peninsula and Grogol. The traffic in these areas are crowded, especially during rush hours. Another reason why the operation is conducted is to reduce congestions in the area of West Jakarta. “Many public transportation vehicles, which did not comply to the traffic signs, cause congestions everywhere. They will be issued a ticket,” officer Ipung said.
