TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa said that narcotics rehabilitation centers were lacking capacity despite the high number of drug cases in the nation. Khofifah explained this had resulted in overloaded rehabilitation centers.
"The existing rehab centers can only meet eight percent of the national demand," said Khofifah.
In total, Indonesia has only 105 units of drug centers. However, the recent policy stipulating that drug addicts should be rehabilitated as opposed to serving jail time had caused rehab centers to be overcrowded.
The minister said rehab centers also lacked counselors. "One counselor is supposed to cover 10 addicts. What we have now is one counselor covers 45 addicts," said Khofifah.
