TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - NR, a 23 years old resident of Kala Timur village in Dompu district, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), died after he was shot during a raid by the Special Anti-Terrorism Detachment 88 (Densus 88) on Saturday, September 20, 2014.

NTB Police Chief Brigadier Gen. Sriyono revealed in Mataram on Monday, September 22, 2014, that authorities had given NR multiple warnings to surrender, to which NR responded by threatening to throw a hand-held explosive device towards the authorities.

"In order to avoid any collateral damage, police authorities made the decision to shoot NR on the spot," said Sriyono to the press at NTB Police headquarters.

Sriyono described NR's death during the raid as 'regrettable', because NR is only one among many other victims of religious radicalisation.

"NR was brainwashed. We could have prevented this and protected him from religious fundamentalists," said Sriyono.

NR is wanted by the Densus 88 for his involvement with a terrorist syndicate in Indonesia. "According to Densus 88's intelligence, he had been involved in terrorist acts in Poso," explained Sriyono.

"He was also implicated in a terrorism case in Dompu." added Sriyono.

NR's remains were moved to Bhayangkara Hospital in Mataram on Saturday, September 20, 2014, along with a number of terrorism suspects that were arrested during the raid on Kala Timur hamlet. An autopsy of NR's remains will be conducted by Polri and NTB Police autopsy team in Mataram.

Those arrested have since been flown out of Lombok's International Airport to the National Police (Polri) Headquarters in Jakarta for further investigation.
