TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Isa Muhsin, deputy secretary general for membership and regeneration at the United Development Party (PPP), said although his party is to join the coalition led by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), it will not necessarily support direct regional elections.

"We have evaluated this matter since 2010, and we still think that regional elections by legislative councils are better," Isa told Tempo yesterday.

The PPP would not change its stance over the regional elections, unless being discussed at the national work meeting held next Tuesday, September 23.

The PPP, along with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Functional Group Party (Golkar), the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) and the National Mandate Party (PAN), is endorsing the regional elections by legislative councils. Meanwhile the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI-P), the National Democratic Party (NasDem), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) and the Democrat Party are supporting the direct regional elections.

The bill draft discussion will resume tomorrow and the first level decision will be taken a day after. The decision will be announced at the plenary session on September 25.
