Indonesian Car Exports to Reach Rp117 Trillion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi said Indonesian car exports will increase by twofold to US$10 billion (Rp117 trillion) in the next three years.
Lutfi said that automotive product exports will change Indonesia’s position from raw good and intermediate good seller to high-tech good producers. “Automotive industry will become Indonesia’s main export,” Lutfi told Tempo during ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meetings in Myanmar.
Indonesia has a fast-growing car production. Lutfi said Indonesia used to need 40 years to produce one million units, but now, realization of production of two million units is estimated to be reached before 2020. “In 2025-2027, our car production will reached three million units,” said Lutfi, adding that Indonesia will become regional champion for automotive sector.
The Association of the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) recorded that exports of completely build up vehicles reached 105,251 units on January to July. The figure is 7.56 percent higher from the same period last year.
The highest exports were on March with 20,256 units while the lowest was on July with 12,667 units. Exports of completely knocked down vehicles increased by 3.86 percent and reached 63,750 units on January to July.
