TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Jakarta Cooperative, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Agency Joko Kundaryo said at least 2,000 street vendors in Jakarta have already had an auto debit card.
The number will increase as the card-making process is still underway. "We continue to issue the card and improve it," Joko said at the City Hall Friday.
The street vendors responded positively to the plan of the card usage which can be used to save their profits.
The use of the card may also help the Jakarta provincial government to find out the income of the vendors, said Joko.
"[That way], we don’t have to do any survey," Joko said, adding that the holder of the auto debit card will be urged to join the social security program (BPJS) program. "If they are ill, it’s easy to help them."
The card is multifunction and does not only be used to pay retribution. Therefore, the provider of the card, Bank DKI, needs to prepare the system for it.
A data in 2005 showed there were around 200,000 street vendors in Jakarta. This year, the number is predicted to increase to 600,000.
