TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 112 plantation merchants were forced to leave the premises of Putra Putri Garden, Pluit, Penjaringan yesterday. An eviction was seen necessary as the merchants turn the area into a business venue. The government will arrange and return its function as water infiltration.
"There shouldn’t be any building in this park especially when they have taken advantage of the land for commercial activities. So it must be disciplined," said the City Secretary of North Jakarta, Junaedi, in a statement.
The park has been occupied by merchants since last year. They built buildings as a business place. The government has issued a warning letter to merchants ordering to evacuate the area and will demolish the buildings they have built.
Suardi, a merchant, claimed to have received the issued letter from the government. However, he said that the noticed was too soon. "The time given is not enough to move all the merchandise."
During the eviction, the city government deployed 1,700 personnels consisting of Civil Servant Unit, Armed Forces, Police authority and the Department of Transportation. The team used four excavators and a water cannon to evict everything.
