TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta Communications, Information and Public Relations Agency chief Alberto Ali said the capital would be equipped with 3,000 surveillance cameras, or also known as closed-circuit televisions (CCTV), by 2015. He added the installation of the CCTVs sought to boost public services and the city’s security.

“The placement would be spread to the capital’s five municipalities,” Alberto said at the City Hall on Monday, August 18 2014, adding that their procurement was carried out through corporate social responsibility and auction schemes.

Alberto said at present there were only 118 CCTVs in the capital and that the public could later access real-time footage of the CCTVs online via www. jakarta.go.id. The CCTVs, he went on, would also be used to monitor congested streets, damaged public facilities and areas prone to crimes.

Alberto explained the utilization of the CCTVs would cut the number of the city administration’s personnel deployed in the field. “ We will no longer need a large number of personnel,” he said.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, meanwhile, said a string of companies had expressed their interest in providing the city administration with the CCTVs. He added the companies could also set up microcells to support 4G networks and above.

Ahok said the Jakarta administration was presently marshalling data on the locations where the CCTVs  would be installed. “After we have many CCTVs, we can find out which areas have the most garbage,” he said.
