TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of Jakarta Police Inspector General Dwi Priyantno said that the police would take a firm action against those who carry out city-wide convoys in celebration of takbiran (Eid al-fitr eve) parade on the night prior to Eid.

"The law clearly bans activities that disrupt public order. Therefore, we ban such an activity," Dwi said yesterday.

People usually do the takbiran convoy by pick-ups or trucks on Jakarta main roads, Dwi added. This activity could lead to violations and disrupting public order and safety.

"A good way to praise God is to go to Mosque, not parade around the city."

About 7,276 personnel will be deployed to ensure the security on Day One of Eid.

The security measure is part of a security operation called 'Operasi Ketupat' (Ketupat Operation) which will be done for six days after Eid al-fitr.

In the meantime, Head of Jakarta Police Public Relations Division Comr. Sr. Rikwanto said the police officers were deployed to 14 rescue centers and 114 integrated security posts.

Other than guarding houses, they would guard public spaces including markets, recreation centers, train and bus stations, airports, harbors and streets prone to traffic congestion.

"This measure aims at bringing the police closer to the people," Rikwanto said.
