TEMPO.CO, Bogor - During the fasting month of Ramadan, the amount of garbage produced in the satellite city of Bogor to the south of Jakarta has risen by 15 percent.
Traditional markets in the city such as Bogor market and Anyar market mostly contribute to the garbage increase.
Head of Sanitary Division of Bogor Garden and Sanitary Agency Uju Juyono said the rise of the amount of garbage in the city was due to the people's increasing activities during Ramadan.
"People consume more (during the fasting month). There are also several impromptu markets in several places that leave piles of trash," Uju said yesterday.
Piles of garbage were seen on Jl. MA Salmun, Jl. Dewi Sartika, and on Jl. Otista, while several locations of temporary trash disposal facilities also look full of garbage.
The amount of wastes produced in Bogor on usual days can reach 2,484 meter cubic, while in Ramadan, it rises by 15 percent into 3,730 meter cubic per day.
"We continue to make the most of the garbage transportation system in several locations where garbage is mostly found, such as Bogor Market and Anyar Market," Uju said.
Last year, one day before Eid Day there were the biggest amount of garbage piled up in the city, especially on the eve before the Eid Day and after Eid Prayer.
"The wastes are normally in the form of food packages or newspaper," Uju said.
The Agency would deploy a special team that would take turn to clean a number of locations, especially in the major roads in Bogor, Uju added.
