TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Governor, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) on the city's location, tourism, education, research, and community service. The MoU is an extension of contract with ITB since five years ago. "It should have been extended since June 2013," said Jokowi.
According to Jokowi, this MoU is the forerunner for the Jakarta Smart City concept implementation. ITB has a team that is capable of providing management of watersheds and slums areas as well as more modern and integrated city spatial planning. "We also believe ITB has experts in disaster management to help Jakarta in managing disasters," said Jokowi.
ITB rector Akhmaloka said this cooperation must be extended for a better Jakarta. "This concept will be like in London, where every activity of the citizens can be monitored including if they litter," he said.
Jakarta has dreamed of a Smart City concept since last year as it provides integrated and efficient management and creates information technology-based sustainable environment. This kind of concept can be seen in Tokyo, Japan; Dubai, the United Arab Emirates; Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia; and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
