Cops Increase Security in Buddhist Viharas

TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Central Java Police instructed all resort police to enhance security measures at Buddhist temples in the province. The instruction was given to anticipate the possibility of terrorist acts in Viharas following Sunday's bombing at Ekayana Vihara in Tanjung Duren, West Jakarta.

"There will definitely be tighter security," Central Java Police Head of Public Relations, Sr. Comr. Djihartono, told Tempo yesterday.

Terrorism observer from the Prasasti Perdamaian Foundation, Noor Huda Ismail, said that in is important to anticipate acts of terror, saying that terror against Buddhist monasteries could spread to areas outside Jakarta.

In Brebes, the police have begun to increase security of in a number of places. "Brimob members and vice officers are safe-measuring these areas," Brebes Police Intelligence Unit Chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Bambang Edi Susanto said yesterday.

Two explosions occurred during an evening service at the Ekayana Vihara. The first explosion happened near the vihara's gate at 7:00 pm local time. According to reports, three people were injured. Based on information gathered by Tempo, the bomb squad found a large black plastic bag inside a garbage can, 20 meter from the scene.
