TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Despite the many criticisms flung at him, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says he will still accept the World Statesman Award that will be given to him during his working visit to New York City, the United States. The president said he would accept the award in his capacity as president.
"Not as an individual," said Yudhoyono before leaving for Stockholm, Sweden, at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport yesterday.
Yudhoyono admitted that he is aware that many people object to him receiving this award. However, he believes that people should not respond negatively towards an award handed out by an international institution.
"We (should be) thankful because the world is observing us," he said.
