TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several leaders of the country’s largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) have begun to declare support for the 2019 presidential election. “Yes, it is okay, it is eligible. That’s a politics,” said Yenny Wahid on Wednesday, November 7.

According to Yenny, NU people or nahdliyin were free to choose a presidential candidate from any camp, including Prabowo Subianto. However, she assessed most of NU support would gather for the candidate with election number 01, Joko Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin, based on several survey result.

The two presidential and vice presidential candidate were currently mobilizing support from nahdliyin. Vice presidential hopeful number 01 Ma’ruf Amin, for example, frequently visited Islamic boarding schools in Central and East Java. Prabowo Subianto also presented in many Islamic schools, such as Al Farros in which the caregiver Irfan Yusuf, cousin of Abdurrahman Wahid, became a spokesman of Prabowo-Sandiaga camp.

Responding to the news, Yenny Wahid said she would not see it as a problem. According to her, the involvement of Irfan to Prabowo camp would not affect the solid support of NU majority to Jokowi-Ma’ruf camp.
