Anies Baswedan: Personal Vehicles Reduced to Improve Air Quality

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has responded to the lawsuit filed by environmentalists under Gerakan Inisiatif Bersih Udara Koalisi Semesta (the Universal Coalition for Clean Air Initiative Movement) against the Jakarta administration, by offering the idea of reducing the number of personal vehicles to improve air quality.
The activists paid a visit to City Hall on Wednesday, December 5, to present the governor with a lawsuit notification following the capital's declining air quality.
Anies Baswedan said the use of personal vehicles contributed to the city’s pollution, thus he called on Jakartans to resort to public transport so as to maintain Jakarta's air quality.

“By opting for public transport, we will automatically reduce Jakarta’s pollution,” said Anies Baswedan in the Thamrin Nine Ballroom at UOB Plaza yesterday. He also pledged that the Jak Lingko integrated transportation program would have wider operational areas.
“Have your ever seen the blue skies during the Eid al Fitr holidays? Why is that? It’s because cars and motorcycles are not operating in the city,” Anies said.
Besides Anies Baswedan, the activists also notified the governors of Banten and West Java, the Indonesian president, the Environment and Forestry Ministry, the Health Ministry and the Home Affairs Ministry.
