IMF Boss Tweets Prayer for Palu Quake Victims

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde managing director expressed her condolences for victims of the earthquake in Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi, which took hundreds of lives.


"I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the people of Sulawesi Island which has been hit so hard by a terrible earthquake and tsunami," Lagarde said in her official twitter account Monday, October 1.


The earthquake and tsunami that hit Palu and Donggola on Friday occurred just a week before the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting, which would take place in Nusa Dua, Bali from October 8 to 15.

On Sunday, September 30, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said that the death toll had reached 832.


BNPB's chief for information and communication Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the number of lives lost in Palu was 821 and in Donggala 11.


Lagarde, who wrote also tweeted her message in Indonesian, conveyed her prayers for the victims and their surviving families.


"My thoughts are especially with those who have lost family and friends. The IMF stands with the Indonesian people," the tweet said.
