Anies Baswedan Scraps Planned Mass Tarawih at Monas

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has scrapped the planned mass tarawih (evening Ramadan prayers) at the National Monument on May 26, 2018.
The planned tarawih has drawn criticism since its announcement, including from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI)’s missionary endeavor commission head, Cholil Nafis, who said it was against the sharia.
Cholil had appealed to the Jakarta administration and suggested the event should take place at the Istiqlal Mosque instead.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno announced the cancellation on Monday afternoon. “We have updated the governor on this matter, and the governor said it would be best that we follow the recommendations of the clerics,” he said at Indosat building in Jakarta on Monday, May 21, 2018.
Earlier, the Jakarta Police said they had yet to receive any formal notice on the event. “Until now, we haven’t received any confirmation or coordination [on the mass tarawih],” said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday.
