TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said the police had yet to receive any official notice from the Jakarta administration on the latter’s planned mass tarawih (evening Ramadan prayers) at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta.

“We haven’t received any confirmation or coordination thus far,” he said at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday, May 21, 2018. The Jakarta administration plans to organize a mass tarawih at Monas on May 26, 2018.

The plan has drawn criticism from multiple parties, among them from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI)’s Dakwah (missionary endeavors) Commission head, Cholil Nafis.

Cholil said organizing tarawih at an outdoor field was against the Islamic sharia. He also questioned the designation of the Monas field for the tarawih, whereas the Istiqlal Mosque was adjacent to the location.

Cholil said prayers carried out at the mosque would be more devout as opposed to that at the field. The young cleric of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) also said that the tarawih should refrain from being a communication tool that people might perceive as a showoff. Thus, he hoped the Jakarta administration would call off the event.
