TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration has relocated 110 from the total 541 trees from the Sudirman-Thamrin area. Jakarta Forestry Agency head Djafar Muchlisin said the trees were moved to the Clean, Human and Authoritative (BMW) Park in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

“After we finish collecting the data, there are 541 trees that will be relocated,” said Djafar in Jakarta, Thursday, March 8.

According to Djafar, the removal and relocation of trees on Jl. Sudirman-Thamrin had begun since last Tuesday. “We are targeting the relocation to be completed this month,” said Djafar.

The tree relocation was carried out in two steps. First, the agency moved 65 trees in the east (Semanggi direction) from the General Sudirman statue to the World Trade Center (WTC) building.

“The second step, we relocate 45 trees on the west side or towards the Hotel Indonesia roundabout (HI) from Hotel Le Meridien to General Sudirman Statue,” said Djafar.

The types of replacement trees that will be planted along the Sudirman-Thamrin sidewalks are terminalia mantaly, mimusops elengi, and manilkara kauki. The space in between the green lanes and the sidewalks, meanwhile, will be planted with redbuds, peacock, and bougainvillea flowers.

“We also coordinate with the road agency Bina Marga to provide space on the sidewalks to plant the trees at a distance of about five to six meters,” said Djafar.
