TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Neurologist Roslan Yusni Hasan said that chemical castration was harmful to health as it would make hormones to become abnormal.

“Hormones will be unbalanced, the brain and body will be disturbed. Everything will be disturbed,” Roslan told Tempo on Friday, May 27.

Roslan’s statement was related to Government Regulation in Lieu of Law No.1/2016 on The Second Amendment of Law No.23/2002 on Child Protection. The law mandates castration against sexual offenders.

According to Roslan, chemical castration will not necessarily prevent men to become rapist. Instead, the punishment serves a function to lower sexual drives.

Roslan added that therapy was usually given to people who lacked of hormones, such as those who were in pain due to low level of estrogen.

“In that case, health is the consideration. However, castration is not for health reasons, but a mean of punishment,” Roslan explained.

Roslan revealed that chemical castration would cause pain since it would make hormones to become unbalanced. Roslan said that a suspect who was castrated might commit rape again despite having a low sexual desire.

Roslan explained that such a condition could be caused by their memory of committing sexual violence. In addition, Roslan suggested, people committed crime because there was an opportunity and a desire to do evil.

Roslan claimed castrated people would likely to be more aggressive and depressed. Roslan explained that the effect of hormonal changes included the feeling of agitation, pain, nausea, and dizziness.
