Ahok to Prepare Low-Floor Buses for the Disabled

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama admitted that Jakarta is not a disabled-friendly city. Therefore, Ahok said that he is currently trying to change existing facilities in Jakarta.
“Indeed, we are working on it. Our buses are not [disabled-]friendly,” Ahok said at Jakarta Governor office, Tuesday, March 29, 2016.
Ahok said that one of the programs to be made for the disabled is provision of low floor buses. Buses in other countries are designed for that purpose, according to Ahok.
Therefore, Ahok said that he will change all city bus units to low floor buses, making them more disabled-friendly. “A board can be dropped at sidewalk level when disembarking [a bus],” he said.
However, Ahok would need some time to realize the idea. Similar to articulated buses, procurement for low floor buses would took around 8-10 months.
Ahok also plans to build disabled-friendly parks and toilets. According to him, the public facilities must be visually impaired friendly. “We have asked for it to be the standard [for public facilities].”
