TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian badminton athlete, Tommy Sugiarto, won Vietnam Open Championship after defeating South Korean Lee Hyun Il in the final match at Ho Chi Minh on Sunday. Tommy, currently world’s number 19, won the title as he triumphed over tournament’s second favorite.

"I have aimed to improve my world ranking," said Tommy, as cited by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI). "I tried to focus on point by point and remaind calm on match point."

Tommy defeated Hyun Il in two straight sets, 21-19 and 21-19. The victory became Indonesian sole achievement in the tournament as female doubles Suci Rizky Andini/Maretha Dea Giovani and female single Fitriani scored only runner up position.
