TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Philippine Government believes that Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, a death row convict, is only a victim of international human trafficking. A Philippine delegate in the Inaugural Meeting of the ASEAN Network for Witness and Victim Protection 2015, Martin T. Menez, emphasized the matter, telling Tempo that "Mary Jane is only a victim."

Martin said that the Philippines must protect its citizen from human trafficking. He added that the nation has prosecuted Mary Jane’s recruiter, notably sending the unfortunate woman to Indonesia with 2.6 kilograms of heroin in 2010. "Politically speaking, we are helping Mary Jane," said Martin.

Moreover, Martin expects that Indonesia can review the sentence and eventually release the mother of two.

Mary Jane had been scheduled for death execution on April 2015. She was saved by the bell as her recruiter, Maria Kristina Sergio, turned herself in at the last minutes.
